Pablo Aravena has announced a special screening marking the 20th anniversary of Next: A Primer on Urban Painting on October 16 at The Garden Cinema, London. This documentary, co-produced with agnès b, takes place in the United States, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Germany, England, Spain, Japan, and Brazil, and features painters, writers, designers, and members of the global graffiti/street art community who show us their work and illustrate the evolution of modern graffiti from its beginnings in 1970s New York to the early 2000s. This film captured the early days of the global street art movement with many artists who are still active and even more famous today.
Made at the dawn of the digital revolution, Aravena shot his film using a combination of digital video, Super–16, and 35mm, borrowing the modus operandi of the street artists themselves to assemble a collage of sequences into a film that is as free and dynamic as the work of its subjects.
The director will be present at The Garden Cinema to answer your questions and discuss the five years it took to make the film, as well as his experience capturing this seminal period in the street art movement, during which he was able to spend time with many of the world’s most important urban artists. The Q&A will be moderated be renowned artist and curator Cedar Lewisohn.
