Christie’s announced earlier this week that they’ll be having their annual Banksy-only sale online from September 10–23. Titled Banksy: I Can’t Believe You Morons Actually Buy This Sh*t, the name pays tribute to his 2006 Morons screen print referencing the 1987 Christie’s lot where Van Gough’s Sunflowers sold for a whopping £22,500,000. No work had ever made as much at auction before, marking this moment as a turning point in realising the power and potential of auction houses.
In September 2019, a similar sale by the same name saw Banksy’s work bringing in £1,095,250. Of the 29 pieces sold, the most expensive went for £395,250. This year’s will be led with a rare artist’s proof of Girl with Balloon, arguably one of his most famous prints, and an opportunity for the artist to set new records with the auction house.
